Frequently Asked Questions

Does my doctor have to refer me to a physiotherapist?

In Alberta, you can directly access all of our therapists here at Emerald Hills. If you have a detailed history or if you are unsure if physiotherapy is the correct treatment plan for you, you can discuss your concerns with your physician before booking.

Why should I choose Emerald Hills Physio & Sports?

At Emerald Hills Physio & Sports, we have over 50 years of combined experience within the industry. Our multidisciplinary team can create a personalized, collaborative approach to ensure that your needs are being met. If you are interested in meeting our team, please book a consultation by calling our clinic!

How do I pay for my appointment?

Emerald Hills offers direct billing. If you are unsure whether your insurance providers offer coverage for any of our services, you can contact them to find out the details of your health plan. Otherwise, please have your Health Insurance and Alberta Health Card handy at the beginning of your appointment.

How many appointments will I need to see results?

Your treatment plan will be customized to suit your needs. Depending on your health concern and treatment plan, the amount of treatments that we suggest will vary. We will provide you with exercises and movements that you can do at home to assist with your treatment plan. For further information on your condition, please book a consultation with one of our therapists.

What happens during a physiotherapy appointment?

We will begin your appointment with a general questionnaire that will ask you for general contact information, family doctor information, healthcare information, current medications, etc. Our first step is to get an overall view of your health. After this, your therapist will ask you detailed questions about your concern, injury or chronic pain. We perform routine movement tests that assess your mobility, posture and joints. We suggest dressing in light and comfortable clothing so we can perform a thorough assessment.

Following our assessment, our therapist will discuss a diagnosis and your treatment plan. We may suggest using treatments such as thermal modalities, needling or joint mobilization. Your plan will be entirely customized to suit your individual needs.

You will be given time to have an open and honest conversation with your therapist about your concerns and questions. Afterwards, your therapist will likely provide you with ‘homework’ or a treatment plan with exercises that you can complete at home.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring your Alberta Health Care Card and Health Insurance or payment information. You also may want to bring water to stay hydrated or light clothing for us to do the assessment in.

How long will my treatment last?

Our appointments can last anywhere between 30-60 minutes, depending on what we are treating.

Are at-home exercises really that important?

Yes! Physiotherapy is an ongoing treatment plan that requires your active participation. By completing the exercises we give you, you are helping your body to heal and respond to treatment. At-home exercises will allow you to be comfortable and able to complete with the equipment you have at home.
